An Apparent Paradox

The Paradox is concerning the perseverance of the Christian. What Makes Him Tick?
In John Bunyan's book, The Pilgrims Progress, written over three hundred years ago, a strange paradox is presented to the reader. The paradox is concerning the perseverance of the Christian.
What makes him tick? What keeps him in the narrow way with the passing of time, and through the trials of his faith?
Can human reasoning provide the answer? Please study the graphical illustration below. The question is asked: "Why doesn't the fire go out?" This question demands a supernatural explanation.
A supernatural explanation comes from a supernatural BOOK. A supernatural BOOK is written by a supernatural Author.
The BIBLE is this BOOK!!! Its Author is God. And in the English language, it is the King James Bible!
