Question Number 56

Question. What is the meaning and method of water baptism?

Answer. It is a picture, and confession, before the body of believers (the church), pointing to your death, burial and resurrection in Christ accomplished at your new birth. This baptism is by immersion in water after being BORN AGAIN.

WATER BAPTISM IS TO POINT TO SPIRITUAL BAPTISM.

To worship God who is SPIRIT, we must be spiritually born again. “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” In John 3:5-6: we see the first birth and second birth.

BORN OF THE FLESH

The first birth is being born of the water, and happened at our natural birth coming into the world out the water of the womb OF OUR MOTHER.

BORN OF THE SPIRIT

The second birth is being born again, which is OF THE SPIRIT. “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.” [1 Corinthians 12:13]
